'Criminal Intent' Takes Case to Cable

'L&O' spinoff to USA, mothership stays on NBC

    May 13, 2007

'Law & Order: Criminal Intent' stars Vincent D'Onofrio and Chris Noth
There will, in fact, only be two "Law & Order" series on NBC next year. But the third is staying in the Peacock's family.

In a move NBC is calling "groundbreaking," the youngest member of the "L&O" family, "Criminal Intent," will move to cable for the 2007-08 season. First-run episodes will air on USA -- which is part of the NBC Universal conglomerate -- and will be repurposed on the broadcast network a short time later. That's a reverse of the current arrangement.

The original "Law & Order," meanwhile, will stay on NBC for its 18th season, continuing its reign as the longest-running drama currently on television. It will hit 400 episodes early next season.

"We have significantly strengthened the already powerful USA network, given NBC maximum flexibility, and in the process have changed the paradigm of prime-time television," NBC Universal president and CEO Jeff Zucker says in a statement. "By changing the traditional way programs are rolled out, we have reinforced NBC Universal's forward-thinking approach to new programming strategies and our willingness to embrace bold thinking."

The moves end a whirl of speculation about the fate of "Law & Order" and "Criminal Intent," which have taken ratings hits this season and were considered on the bubble for renewal (the third and most-watched "L&O" series, "Special Victims Unit," got an early pickup in January).

One scenario had the mothership moving to TNT, which owns the rights to repeats of the show. Shifting "Criminal Intent" to USA, however, keeps all three shows in the NBCU family -- the company's studio arm, NBC Universal TV Studio, also produces the shows. As part of the deal, the studio has extended its deal with executive producer Dick Wolf for several more seasons.

"I am thrilled and delighted that Wolf Films and NBC Universal will continue the longest-running and most successful partnership in television," Wolf says. "This is a win-win for everybody. ... This is the tip of the sphere of a new media paradigm."

The deal will likely be a boon to USA. "Criminal Intent" averaged 8.9 million viewers on NBC this season; USA's top-rated shows draw about 5 million viewers.

Scheduling details, including when the "Criminal Intent" reruns will air on NBC, have yet to be finalized.

    Sigue Supernatural? Alguien Sabe Algo?

    Big Shots

    Drama

Premise: Four top executives lean on one another for help in their personal and professional lives.

First Impressions: The tale of four powerful men and the women who love them, or used to, or who take them to couples' therapy. There's a breezy feel to the show that seems like a pretty good fit with its "Grey's Anatomy" lead-in, with all the lead actors (Joshua Malina in particular) getting to show off their comedic chops.

Stars: Michael Vartan ("Alias"), Dylan McDermott ("The Practice"), Josh Malina ("The West Wing"), Christopher Titus ("Titus"), Jessica Collins ("The Nine"), Paige Turco ("Rescue Me," "The Agency"), Wendy Moniz ("The Guardian"), Nia Long ("Are We Done Yet?"), Peyton List ("Day Break"), Amy Sloan ("Gilmore Girls")

    Studio: Warner Bros. TV

Producers: Jon Harmon Feldman ("Reunion"), Charles McDougall ("Desperate Housewives")
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Carpoolers

    Comedy

Premise: Four very different men use their daily commute to bond and vent about their lives.

First Impressions: A large portion of this show will apparently consist of four guys talking in a car, so the writing had better be really sharp. There were a couple moments of spark in the clip, but it feels a little self-consciously quirky.

Stars: Fred Goss ("Sons & Daughters," "Significant Others"), Faith Ford ("Hope & Faith," "Murphy Brown"), Jerry O'Connell ("Crossing Jordan," "Sliders"), Jerry Minor ("Arrested Development"), Allison Munn ("That '70s Show"), Tim Peper ("The Guiding Light") and TJ Miller

    Studio: ABC Studios

Producers: Bruce McCulloch ("SNL," "Kids in the Hall"), Justin Falvey ("Las Vegas"), David Miner ("30 Rock"), Anthony and Joe Russo ("You, Me and Dupree")
    .................................................. .................................................. ......................................

    Cavemen

    Comedy

Premise: Inspired by the Geico commercials, three modern cavemen try to make it in the moder world.

First Impressions: This is one thin joke, and while that may be fine for a 30-second ad, it's going to be awfully hard to play out over 20 or 22 minutes each week. The promo reel referred to the cavemen as the world's "oldest minority group" -- eek.

Stars: Bill English, Nick Kroll, Dash Mihok ("Felicity"), Kaitlin Doubleday, John Heard ("Prison Break," "The Sopranos") and Stephanie Lemelin ("CSI")

    Studio: ABC Studios

Producers: Daniel Rappaport ("Office Space"), Guymon Casady ("Hope & Faith"), Will Speck and Josh Gordon ("Blades of Glory"), Bill Martin and Mike Schiff ("Grounded for Life") and Joe Lawson
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Dirty Sexy Money

    Drama

Premise: An idealistic lawyer inherits his late father's practice -- representing a wealthy, ne'er-do-well family with a closet full of skeletons.

First Impressions: A little darker than its title might imply, "Dirty Sexy Money" nonetheless feels like a show that people might talk about. It's a jaundiced, potentially blackly funny look at the corrupting power of wealth and privilege, with Peter Krause well-cast as the outsider who''s brought into that world.

Stars: Peter Krause ("Six Feet Under"), William Baldwin ("The Squid and the Whale"), Donald Sutherland ("Commander in Chief"), Jill Clayburgh ("Ally McBeal," "Nip/Tuck"), Samaire Armstrong ("Entourage," "The O.C."), Natalie Zea ("Eyes"), Glenn Fitzgerald ("Six Feet Under"), Seth Gabel ("The Da Vinci Code"), Zoe McLellan ("JAG"), Laz Alonso ("Stomp the Yard")

    Studio: ABC Studios

Producers: Greg Berlanti ("Everwood," "Brothers & Sisters"), Craig Wright ("Brothers & Sisters," "Six Feet Under"), Peter Horton ("Grey's Anatomy"), Bryan Singer ("Superman Returns," "House"), Matt Gross

    Private Practice

    Drama

Premise: Dr. Addison Montgomery of "Grey's Anatomy" sets up a new life with some old friends in Southern California.

First Impressions: Similar to that of many of the people who watched the back-door pilot -- which is to say, there's potential there, but the characters need to be more clearly defined. Kate Walsh showed she can lead a show, and the ensemble around her is unusually strong.

Stars: Kate Walsh ("Grey's Anatomy"), Merrin Dungey ("Alias"), Tim Daly ("The Nine"), Taye Diggs ("Day Break"), Amy Brenneman ("Judging Amy"), Paul Adelstein ("Prison Break"), Chris Lowell ("Veronica Mars")

    Studio: ABC Studios

Producers: Shonda Rhimes ("Grey's Anatomy"), Marti Noxon ("Buffy the Vampire Slayer"), Betsy Beers, Mark Gordon, Michael Grossman

    Pushing Daisies

    Drama

Premise: A man discovers his touch can bring the dead back to life -- but they die again if he touches them a second time.

First Impressions: A visual feast -- all bold colors and striking images, "Daisies" has a fairy-tale quality to it that really is something you haven't seen. We'd like to see how well the eye candy serves the story and characters before making a full judgment, but we definitely want to see more.

Stars: Lee Pace ("Wonderfalls"), Anna Friel ("The Jury"), Kristin Chenoweth ("The West Wing"), Chi McBride ("The Nine"), Swoosie Kurtz ("Huff"), Jim Dale

    Studio: Warner Bros. TV

Producers: Bryan Fuller ("Heroes," "Wonderfalls"), Barry Sonnenfeld ("RV," "Notes from the Underbelly"), Dan Jinks, Bruce Cohen
