World of DC on TV
Learn more about what we'll see in future DC Nation shorts.
The DC Nation programming block began airing just a few weekss ago on Cartoon Network. And while the Saturday morning block is currently centered around new episodes of Green Lantern: The Animated Series and Young Justice, there are also brand new animated shorts that air alongside these shows - including New Teen Titans, Plastic Man and Baby Superman. At WonderCon last weekend, producers Ben Jones and Lauren Faust talked with IGN about what it's been like to work with such specific time constraints and what fans can expect to see in upcoming shorts.
One of the best aspects about the shorts is that it's allowed creative teams to shift attention to characters they wouldn't normally get to showcase. Jones said it wasn't easy to pick from the vast pool of possibilities. "For that, we had a couple of different lists. We had a list that Sam Register and Peter Girardi had in their heads. They're the ones who came up with the concept, and they had a certain number of characters they wanted to do." Their list included Plastic Man and the Teen Titans among others.

As for the other list, Jones said, "We also had a process where we made a list of 20 characters and opened it up to pitches from people who worked at Warner Bros. and Amethyst and Black Lightning were on that list." They also didn't hesitate to reach out to a couple of creators like the Emmy-winning Faust (whose credits include Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends, Powerpuff Girls and My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic) and simply ask them what they wanted to work on.
Just like they're showcasing different characters, they're also getting the opportunity to try out new writers. "We've brought in a lot of comic book writers and some more independent artists," explained Jones. "It also gives a chance for some of the animators at Warner Brothers to do more than they normally would. We've got characters designers and storyboard artists becoming the producers and directors of these shorts."
Jones brought in Tom Peyer on Doom Patrol and Jones later mentioned at the DC Nation panel that he was especially happy about this short. He's been begging Warner Brothers to do something with Doom Patrol for years. Added Jones, "It's been great to bring some of my favorite writers from that world into this world and give them a chance to show what they can do in the medium."
Though many of the shorts, like SBFF and those from Aardman, are made for laughs to balance out the heavier tones of Green Lantern and Young Justice, Jones said they all wouldn't necessarily be funny. For example, some upcoming shorts will be based on Sword of the Atom. Those will have a serious tone because the story is a "sword and sandals sort of epic and geared towards action." Doom Patrol is walking the solemn line too.
Super Best Friends Forever Clip
Lauren Faust specifically works on the extra adorable Super Best Friends Forever, which is made for comedy. When asked why she chose those characters to focus on, Faust said that for years she's been wondering, why not? Why hasn't someone been doing something like this with "the most recognizable female characters?" She used some of the comic book canon information to develop Supergirl, Batgirl, and Wonder Girl's personalities, but she spun it on its head.
"For Supergirl, I really honed in on the idea that she has all the same powers as Superman and he gets all the attention and nobody notices her. She's such a minor character. And if you're a teenager, I think that would make you really mad." She made Supergirl the angsty one, so she's got something to prove.
With Batgirl, she played on Barbara Gordon's adoration of Batman. "Ever since she was a little girl her dad worked with Batman, and she was a fan. She loves Batman, she loves being a superhero, and her motivation behind what she does is just a love for it and wanting to be part of it." Faust mentioned Commissioner Gordon would be making an appearance in an upcoming SBFF. Finally, with Wonder Girl, she liked that she's an Amazon and grew up away from men. Said Faust, "She's very stoic, very trained, but because she didn't ever live in the world of man there's just a lot of stuff that the other girls say that go way over her head. So while she's the smartest, most heroic, and most capable, she's also got this clueless streak that I think is funny."
The difficulty of working within in such a brief time constraint is that it is hard to fit everything you want to in 75 seconds. Faust said it's painful to let go of material, remarking, "When you're faced with this [short time] in the first place, it is a challenge. You have to think of the way you're going to tell the story. You can't really have a beginning, middle, and end in 75 seconds. For me, it was learning to take a funny idea and it's pretty much set-up and then punch line while trying to make it as funny as you can along the way."
Fans got to see peeks of Animal Man, Doom Patrol, Aardman, and Super Best Friends Forever (SBFF) during the DC Nation panel. As far as who else we can expect to see in upcoming episodes, Jones said there would be more stuff from Aardman, plus Thunder & Lightning, Vibe, the aforementioned Sword of the Atom, and Amethyst: Princess of Gemworld. It's quite possible that if fans respond well to a specific short, it could be developed into future full-length series. The key word being "could," though Jones certainly hopes that occurs.
DC Nation airs on Cartoon Network Saturday mornings from 10am-11am.
