At Wizard World Chicago, Marvel Comics just held a panel to discuss its Ultimates universe. At a panel attended by Joe Quesada, Mark Bagley, Brian Michael Bendis, Mark Millar, Adam Kubert, Nick Lowe, and CB Cebulski; the group announced plans for an Ultimate Fantastic Four, the new Ultimate X-Men writer, and lots more
The Ultimate Fantastic Four will be co-written by Mark Millar and Brian Michael Bendis. The duo are updating and modernizing the FF story a little and promised to “update the origin for current day.” They aren’t going to reveal the gimmick that brings them all off into space, but said “it is another space type race that Reed Richard’s involved in that propels the story.”
Adam Kubert is drawing the series with covers and character designs being provided by Ultimates artist, Bryan Hitch. Also involved on Ultimate Fantastic Four is inker Danny Miki and colorist Dave Stewart.
The new writer of the Ultimate X-Men will be David (Daredevil, Kabuki) Mack. He and Bendis will first co-write a few issues beginning in issue 46, but by the fiftieth anniversary issue, Mack will be scribing the story solo. David Finch is still on board for art chores.
Next the group talked about Ultimate Spider-Man and mentioned a Black Cat arc and an Ultimate Carnage. “We’ve been planning on an Ultimate Carnage for well over a year,” said Bendis. “After Venom we knew that Carnage had to be great! The identity of Carnage is someone readers are familiar with.”
When asked if an Ultimate Hulk would be making another appearance in the Ultimates Millar said, “Oh yah, but in a way that is so unexpected that even Warren Ellis said, ‘you can’t really do that!’”
The Ultimates will be getting a new number one soon. The first thirteen issues are considered the first volume with what would have been issue 14 starting over again as a new Vol. 2 # 1.
Quesada commented that there would be another new Ultimate title joining the lineup in 2004, but would not reveal any details about what it will be about. He said Marvel is very “careful” with the Ultimate universe and liked things to develop gradually
