FELL TRADE PAPERBACK DUE IN APRIL FROM IMAGE
Finally nailing down a date, Image has confirmed for Newsarama that the first trade paperback collection of Warren Ellis and Ben Templesmith’s
Fell,
Feral City will arrive in April from the publisher.
The series, which began in September of 2005, marked a new creative direction, as well as a a publishing one for Image. As Ellis
told Newsarama in June of ’05 – “
Fell is a 24-page single, that contains 16 pages of full color comics and several pages of what's called back matter -- text stuff, sketches, background material, perhaps even audience emails as we get going. And it retails for $1.99 American.
“Further; each issue is a self-contained story. If you read them all, yeah, you'll see ideas and relationships develop. But there's nothing stopping anyone entering the series at any moment, understanding the set-up and getting a complete experience out of it. It's no harder to walk in on than any episode of
Law and Order.
“Self-contained, as densely packed as Ben and I can manage, with extra reading material in the back, for a buck less than most books of its type.”
Since it’s launch, the series has been both a commercial and critical success, selling out on multiple issues, despite Image’s commitment to keep each issue in stock for reorders, as well as rising orders from retailers. The format, questioned by skeptics from its initial announcement, has proven successful for the series, as well as for Image, as Matt Fraction and Gabriel Ba’s
Casanova currently runs in the same, shorter format.
The short version of what the series is about, then -
Fell chronicles the life of Detective Richard Fell, a big city detective transferred over the bridge to Snowtown, a feral district whose police investigations department numbers three and a half people - one detective has no legs. Dumped in this collapsing urban trashzone, Fell is starting all over again and his ongoing story delivers visceral morality tales from the periphery of city life. In a place where nothing seems to make any sense, Detective Fell clings to the one thing he knows to be true: Everybody’s hiding something.
