    WONG: INKING THE MOODY CREEPER

    BY JENNIFER M. CONTINO

Helping The Creeper enter this Brave New World is inker Walden Wong. He's reteamed with his Human Race and Day of Vengeance collaborator, artist Justiniano and writer Steve Niles, to work on a Creeper he said "isn't your daddy's Creeper!"

Wong was very cryptic about the goals of this Creeper and Jack Ryder's motivations. "Who is he?" Wong posed. "What can he do? Why is he here? What's his purpose? Creeper is different from your average superhero. The majority of comics today are the average men-in-tights, but with the Creeper, there's this sense of mystery. Creeper has some serious issues with his life. There's a lot going on- complicated stuff. Creeper isn't a practical joker anymore. He's more serious now."

"Were approaching this Creeper as a much darker character - more violent and graphic," he continued. "I, too, didn't think a yellow man in green hair can creep anyone out. But with this darker, more moody, more violent Creeper ... lets just say when you see a yellow man with green hair running toward you, the hair on the back of your neck will stand, and you better think quick about running the other direction as fast as you can."

Which is different from how most people might remember him, and from how Wong recalled the colorful character. "I remembered the Creeper as the comedic character that's kinda funny," Wong said. "Mostly because I was exposed to the animated Creeper from the WB cartoon shows as well as working on an issue of JLU that he made an appearance in. I wasn't exposed to the original Creeper comics that Steve Ditko did from 1968 or any other Creeper comics that came out in between."

The inker said it was Joey Cavaliery who told him he would be working on The Creeper with frequent collaborator Justiniano. Wong viewed this project as "perfect" after he found out writer Steve Niles was scripting this darker series, but admitted he wasn't sure how DC was going to be able to publish it, as he and Justiniano have been creating each page. "There are some seriously graphically violent images in here - almost disturbing," he said. "[There are] some things I've never seen DC Comics publish."

"I think [Justiniano and I] are a great team," he continued. "We know exactly what we can expect from each other. I've been working with Justiniano so long, that I know exactly what he wants - even if he doesn't spell it out for me. He also let me do whatever I want with the inks, so I also throw in lots of new stuff and get feedback from him. We speak to each other - a lot, so that's also a plus when it comes to the final artwork. He gives me a lot of artistic freedom. With every past project we've worked on together (Human Race, Day of Vengeance, Flash, The Day of Vengeance Special), I've done things completely different with the inking. With the Creeper, it's much more darker - lots of blacks - and a lot of blacks on black where images could be lost. But I'm able to make everything as clear as day, even if it's as dark as night."

For those curious on the tools of the trade, Wong said to create his effects on these pages he's using "quill nib, brushes, tech pens, white ink, various templates, and lots more!" He said, "My tools doesn't change much with inking new and different assignments. Is the time period of each different tool that's used that changes. I've versatile with any and all tools to complete ink a page, it's the look that a certain tool can create that I like to do."

"Everything influences me," he continued. "I like looking at many different inkers and artist and what they do. Especially with art that has a lot of details. But with this Creeper series, I like to say that I'm doing some techniques that I swiped from Tim Townsend - which is a compliment to my man, T-Dog!

Wong wouldn't reveal much about the plot of this new series, but did tease a "major player in the DCU" would be making a guest appearance in some of the early issues. Other than that, all he would say is, "you get to see how the Creeper is the Creeper and, dare I say it, some creeper stuff going on."

Look for Wong's inks in the six issue limited series The Creeper, beginning this month and in The Flash. Also look for his work in The Next six issue miniseries.
