Getting a return invitation to work on WATCHMEN just before the holiday break was an early Christmas gift for this extra. And it came with a change of scenery. After working several days on that incredible New York set, I was surprised and curious to learn that this new shoot would be on location. We weren’t told much about what the scene was to be, but for any fan of the novel, a little information goes a long way. Allow me to illustrate: We were told that the scene was to be set in a TV studio and we extras were to be the studio audience. Need I say more? I didn’t think so.

So I trundled myself off to the Burnaby campus of BCIT and into costume for my first face-to-face meeting with Dr. Manhattan. Oh, his mug was plastered all over the walls and storefronts of the New York set on posters precisely recreating the cover of Nova Express from the novel – and the magazine itself sat on the newsstand. However this was the first time seeing him in the flesh. So to speak. Also, to be part of so pivotal a scene in the story only added to my anticipation. I can’t say strongly enough how refreshing it was to see the enthusiasm of my fellow extras.

Copies of the novel abounded in the holding tent and were well thumbed by those familiar with the story and others who just had to know what all the excitement was about. Groups of extras would return to the tent after being called to set for a quick shot and would rush over to someone with the novel to see what scene they had just done. In fact, one extra was not even an extra. He was a fan who pressured the casting department to let him work on the film, finally agreeing to do it for free just to be part of it. And this guy had to drive 3 hours up from Washington State! Sadly he got into a minor traffic accident on the way back the next morning and missed the second day of shooting. Folks like this only added to the feeling amongst us that we were part of something special, not just your run of the mill movie production and fueled the excitement even more. When the call came to go to set, I was more than ready to answer it.

As usual the set designers had done a superlative job of bringing to life what is on the comic page. Long familiar with the novel, I felt as though I was, literally, stepping into it. The rows of seats, the vintage cameras and monitors aimed at the spartan (no pun intended, Mr. Snyder) set with its two chairs in front of a large sign that read: FACE TO FACE WITH DR. MANHATTAN – it was perfect! And when the actors playing the reporters took their places amongst us, they were right in the spots they occupy in the novel. The scene was coming to life almost exactly as it had been drawn. With a couple of tweaks however. The first being that there are three reporters, not two and the questions they ask are different as well though in keeping with the scene.

The extra reporter is from the New York Times. The female reporter gets the first question as she does in the novel but she does not ask about Afghanistan. The reporter from the Times is next, then it’s time for you know who.

Or course Doug Roth is there, just as he appears in the novel although he is now brunette, not blonde. And as far as his questions go, well, if you’ve read the novel, you already know. Did I mention Ted Koppel? That’s right – Dr. Manhattan is on Koppel’s show. The actor playing Koppel sounds just like the journalist and is wearing enough prosthetics to be the man’s twin. Also, for the record, Manhattan and Koppel have switched seats. Manhattan sits on the audience’s right, Koppel on the left.

But what about the good doctor, how did he appear? Good question. The answer: I can’t tell you. Because I don’t know. Well, I do and I don’t…. sheesh! Nothing is ever cut and dried where Dr. Manhattan is concerned.

Actor Billy Cruddup was present for the two-day shoot. He was dressed in Manhattan’s impeccable black suit, but he wore a tight-fitting skullcap and what looked like soccer goalie gloves… Now before you WATCHMEN purists cry foul and start boycotting theaters that will be showing the movie, let me explain further. The skullcap and white gloves were dotted with tiny, blue fiber-optic lights. When switched on they cast a warm, rich blue glow. Cruddup’s face, not blue, was dotted with reference points and lines around the mouth so that special effects added to the lights and dots will transform Mr. Cruddup into the good doctor we all know and love. And they’ve included the darker shade of blue scene as well. Cruddup gives a reserved yet captivating performance in the scene. He invests Manhattan with a voice possessed with a Hal 9000 dreaminess as the doctor tries his best to answer the early questions. Also, his physicality is very restrained. He sits in the chair as sedately as a ‘God’ should and yet conveys just the right amount of concern and unease when Roth starts into him.

Having now seen Rorschach/Kovacs, Dreiberg and Laurie, the two Bernards, Dr. Malcolm Long, and Hollis Mason in person as well as pictures of the Comedian, Nite Owl (cover of the New Frontiersman) and Dr. Manhattan (Nova Express), I can safely say that this is one fan who is completely satisfied as to the look of these timeless characters. You don’t have to look twice at the actors in full costume and make up to know who they are playing. There is an alteration – more a combining of plot points handled separately in the novel – that I won’t go into out of respect for the filmmakers. I will say that we may NOT get Osterman’s flashback to his watchmaker father as he tells that story to the TV audience. That is just speculation on my part as getting this information twice in the film might be redundant. I hope I’m wrong as it’s a powerful scene in the novel, one that should be shown, not described. I suppose one has to expect a certain amount of compression from comic to screen.

Habiendo visto en persona a Rorschach/Kovacs, Dreiberg, Laurie, los dos Bernards, el Dr. Malcolm Long y Hollis Mason, al igual que las fotos de El Comediante, Nite Owl (la portada de New Frontiersman) y Dr. Manhattan (Nova Express), puedo asegurar que soy una fanática completamente satisfecha por el aspecto de esos personajes inmortales. It was a lot of fun being in the group pouring out of the stands to press Dr. Manhattan when all hell breaks loose. There were more than 100 of us of varying ages, athletic ability and mobility and yet we surged forward with convincing gusto in every take. We may just be background performers but we sell the chaos at the end of this scene. It’ll look like a mad house on screen, but let me state for the record that no extras were injured during the filming of this scene. It was a great couple of days – like I said, a wonderful Christmas present. And I for one am looking forward to disappearing as Dr. Manhattan whisks us out to the parking lot in postproduction. It’ll be great to be part of the Manhattan transfer.

He Did It!

One persistent Watchmen fan tells the story of how he got a role in the upcoming movie adaptation

On February 4th 2008, Joel Studer, a mild mannered Watchmen fan, pointed his mouse over to WatchmenComicMovie.com, just like he told me he does every day, to get the latest scoops on the upcoming movie.

When he saw our story reporting on the latest “Cassandra Faust” extra report, he was floored to see that she mentioned him in her account.

He immediately sent me an email, and I asked him if he wanted to have a chance to tell his story. He was very happy to. The following is the amazing tale of the Watchmen fan that could — in his own words…

My Amazing Watchmen Experience

I read Watchmen a few years ago and ever since have been determined to get everyone I know to read it. I’m a motorcycle builder and mechanic living in Washington, and know very little about the movie industry, but when I heard they were filming a movie version of Watchmen in Vancouver, I knew I had to find a way in.

I started looking on the Internet for Vancouver production offices, and lists of the movies being produced, and managed to figure out who was casting the extras for Watchmen. I figured that being an extra was likely one of the easiest ways to get into the movie, considering I have no acting experience.
I contacted someone in the casting department and pleaded my case to her. I told her I was a huge fan, and just wanted to be able to say I was part of the Watchmen movie – part of Watchmen history. Thank God she heard me. That’s not to say it didn’t take a while to convince her. I emailed her about once every other week from August through December. Finally, she contacted me on December 7th and offered me a part as an extra in the studio audience of the Dr. Manhattan talk show appearance scene.

On December 20th, my first day of filming, I woke up at 3 am, got in my truck, and headed from Washington towards the Canadian border. I got a little lost on the way, but I had some maps that were sent to me from the movie production offices, with smiley face Watchmen production logos printed on them. After a long drive, I finally arrived at the BCIT campus where they were shooting the scene at around 6 am.

I was one of the first extras to arrive, so I made my way through the various production trailers and tents until I found the tent labeled “EXTRAS.” I sat there and waited to check in until more people showed up and got to chat with some real outstanding people in the cast and crew. Everyone there was extremely friendly and was interested in the fact that I hadn't done any extra work before. I was equally interested in anything they had to say about acting or the production. I wanted to know everything about the New York City backlot, and anyone I spoke to about it said it was unlike any other set they had seen before.

When I finally checked in they took me over to wardrobe where I was put into my 80’s costume (I actually got to wear my own Harley-Davidson belt and buckle). I was then ushered off to the hair stylist, who was so eager to get that 80’s look onto the screen, she set my hair up like that guy in the band Flock of Seagulls. Then I went back to the tent where I waited to be called to the set.

Again, I can’t say enough how cool all of the other extras were. I can’t believe someone I met was “Cassandra Faust,” I only wish I knew who she was. We played a dice game while we waited and occasionally I read my own worn out copy of Watchmen. Everyone was interested in the scene we were filming and anyone who hadn’t already read the story was hooked once they saw it in the pages of the graphic novel.

When we were finally called, we all headed towards the set, which was inside one of the school buildings. We formed a line in the hallway and I ended up being second in line. They ushered us all in and directed me to where in the audience I should sit. I ended up in the second row up, second from the end if you’re facing the stage. Zack Snyder even made a comment about my hair on set, saying something along the lines of, “That's straight out of the 80’s.” As far as the scene goes, I don’t want to give away any more than Faust has, but she was correct in her account. There were three reporters and their questions were not word for word from the graphic novel, so obviously neither was Dr. Manhattan’s answers. However, the questions and responses worked so well, they would have fit right in the book.

By the way, Doug Roth’s hair was blond. It was more of a dirty blond, but I wouldn’t call it brunette or brown like Cassandra did. It’s not yellow like in the graphic novel, but more of a realistic blond complete with a blond mustache. I sat right behind the second reporter to ask questions, and I was one row down and two to the left of Roth. To sit there and watch Zack Snyder run around the room, talking to the actors and set crew, it was very surreal — like I was inside a special feature on the 300 DVD.

While they were shooting I caught a glimpse of a picture of Jackie Earle Haley made up like Walter Kovacs, on what appeared to be a fake magazine cover, and which was taped to the side of one of the screens Snyder was watching. Haley looked perfect — right down to the tattered fingerless green gloves and wild red hair.

Once they were done with us, I took the long way out just to get a better look at the Kovacs picture and it gave me a chill. We had lunch and then went back to the set for more of the same. They filmed the same few lines, each time from different angles. It was really cool to see how it all fit together. When all was said and done, I was really blown away by the magnitude of it all.

At 11:30 pm I got back into my truck and headed home. In retrospect, I wish I would have stayed at a hotel, but instead I drove home, not a bit tired from the 17 hour day on the set I had put in. They told me before I had left that I needed to be back there at 9 am the next morning, which was later than the first day and lent to my decision to drive home that night. I got home at 1:30 am, and finally fell to sleep at 2:30 am after the adrenaline of the day wore off.

The next day, I woke up at 6am, got in my truck and headed out onto the highway back toward Vancouver. Now maybe it was my lack of sleep or maybe I just wasn’t paying enough attention, but during my drive a semi started to coast into my lane and I jerked the wheel. Bad move. I ended up in a ditch, with only a couple hours before I needed to check in at the set. Needless to say, I never made it. I was lucky enough to have the cell phone number of an extra I had become friends with the day before and through calling him I got in touch with the crew members who were in charge of the extras. They were understanding and thanked me for calling. They were really cool about it and I think they felt my pain.

I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who helped me be a part of the Watchmen movie. Andrea, Joe, Peter, James, and WatchmenComicMovie.com for letting me tell my story. Who Watches The “Watchmen” Movie Stills?

An extremely reliable source (let’s call them “Wallfly”) has seen some production stills from the “Watchmen” flick and has sent their reactions to KFR along with descriptions of what the stills depict. Having just re-read the series in it’s absolute form just two-three weeks ago, I’m extra stoked about this right now and wish the darn thing was coming out this summer. But enough jibber jabber - here’s what Wallfly has to say.

I have just come back from a viewing of some images from the WATCHMEN movie.

I am a huge fan of the graphic novel so I was very happy to be able to see a bunch of photos that seemed to be on location during shooting photos and costume tests for the film.

RORSCHACH - definitely my favorite from the series and looking super creepy in real life. I think most readers know that the rorschach effect on the mask will be done in CG as all the photos I saw of him he just had a blank white mask on. The suit is all brown, which I guess will darken up when filming. Basically looks awesome and one still I saw has him with his grapple hook gun. There are shots of him picketing without the mask as Ernie Kovacs….I still can’t believe this is Kelly from the Bad News Bears…but he’s perfectly freaky for this character. I hope the voice is as good - hurm….!

COMEDIAN - I am not familiar with the actor playing him but wow - glad they went with the actor who looked most like the comic art than someone famous.. The shots I saw were tests for the original yellow and purple Comedian costume, with Batman-like domino mask. The cooler photos show the same actor aged with that huge scar on his face. The aged make-up is fantastic and he’s chomping on his cigar. In these stills it seems some were taking from the beginning sequence where (SPOILER) The Comedian gets killed, we see the killer clearly in these photos but we all know those will be darkened up. Also some of the make-up tests show the bloody face the Comedian will have during his death sequence. Even in his bathrobe he has the happyface pin on.

DR. MANHATTAN - It seems that Billy Crudup is wearing some kind of electrical appliances on the top of his head and on his hands while in a suit. I am guessing that this is to show a natural blue glow on his clothes when they CG in his head. Not much to see here is as I guess these are all on set photos so no CG is there…I also saw a photo of the dome construct where he atomizes himself. Amazingly precise.

SILK SPECTRE - Carla Cugino looks AMAZING in a classic 1940’s looking outfit for the Silk Spectre - the bulk of the photos were of her in her youthful days. The photographer must have loved her. Many photos I saw of her in different types of poses and mostly looking like costume color and lighting tests.

SILK SPECTRE (NEW) - Malin Akerman is looking good. She has either a brunette wig on or has dyed her natural blonde hair. Her outfit looks like real cloth and is so-so from what I saw.

NITE OWL - didn’t see his suit but saw the actor and he looks pretty dead on, I just expected someone like Dan Ackroyd to play him, older and plumper, but other than that the alter ego of Nite Owl looks ok. There were some shots of the headpiece he wears as Nite Owl and it looks OK, like the comic and with goggles. Not bad.

OZYMANDIAS - this guy is spooky looking. The shots I saw have him in his purple suit and really weird doll-like eyes, perfectly combed blonde hair. I also expected a slightly bulkier man playing this character since I saw him as more of a retired Captain America but here he looks quite slim. Didn’t see the costume but all the Veidt ads are in there looking just like Dave Gibbons drew them.

So there you have it my rapid fire memory of what I saw. Sorry I didn’t see the most likely cool stuff like the Nite Owl ship and his full costume. But basically I was able to pour though tons of stuff as it is. If you have any questions about please ask, I just wanted to share this with your readers that are waiting for some new images.

Last remarks - the photos I saw show that there is a definite passage of time. The old Comedian and Silk Spectre stuff looks very 1940’s while the modern Watchmen looks more modern (Yes I also saw the actor in the Nixon makeup and he looks awesome) these are definitely shots off the set so there is no movie magic applied or color balancing which I am sure they will add. But so far I am loving it and it’s extremely faithful almost to a fault. The whole thing looks like “LA Confidential” meets “Superman: The Movie.” I liked what I saw but of course will hold final call till the trailer.

Zack Snyder: Ha habido gente intentando hacer Watchemen durante dieciocho años - y es un proyecto difícil. Creo que hay varias cosas que han ayudado a que finalmente Watchmen entre en producción esta vez. Creo que primero, conforme nos alejábamos de 1985, el concepto de hacer una película ambientada en 1985 se volvía más viable - porque es más una obra de época. Antes, podía haber sido demasiado cercano a 1985. Zack Snyder: Siempre es diferente. No hay una fórmula para adivinar qué funciona y qué no funciona en una película. Realmente se trata de confiar en tus instintos, y saber qué te gusta de la historia - y al final se trata de concentración y respeto. Pasas tiempo pensando en qué pretendían los artistas originales con su historia y entonces trabajas imaginando cómo coger esos conceptos globales y hacerlos tuyos. Encuentras los tesoros y las cosas que te dicen algo. En cuanto decides coger un proyecto, se convierte en tu responsabilidad. Así, mejor que entiendas la fuente original y tengas una perspectiva, una visión clara y un concepto respecto a cómo contar esa historia cinematográficamente mientras te mantienes siempre respetuoso.

John P.: A lo largo de la novela gráfica se presta especial atención a los sutiles cambios en la sociedad y la tecnología tras la introducción del Dr. Manhattan en el mundo. Los coches tienen un aspecto extraño y son eléctricos; la gente fuma tabaco en pipetas de forma extraña, etc. Mi pregunta es ¿cuánto reflejará la ciudad en la película esos avances alternativos en tecnología?

Zack Snyder: No he enfocado demasiado en los cambios tecnológicos que el Dr. Manhattan ha traido al mundo en las primeras secciones de la historia. Lo que he intentado hacer es reservar algunos de esos cambios para más adelante en la película. Parte de la razón es porque quería que la película fuera inmediatamente accesible para el público. Era importante para mi que los espectadores empezaran a entender el mundo en el que están. Es un mundo de algún modo familiar, aunque ligeramente cambiado, debido a la presencia de vigilantes enmascarados, un super-ser y la amenaza nuclear en ciernes de la guerra fría. El público necesita creer en la amenaza, pero esto tiene que ser transmitido de una manera proporcionada correctamente con el resto de la historia. Ahí está el equilibrio.

Alan C: Sabemos que el "Navío Negro" está siendo producido como algún tipo de añadido a la película para el lanzamiento doméstico. Lo que quiero saber es si las partes del "Navío Negro" enlazarán con el quiosco y el cómic como sucede en el libro. ¿Tendrá el DVD una opción para incluir las escenas del "Navío Negro" en contexto con la película (como sucede en el libro) o será sólo un extra aparte?

Zack Snyder: Es mi intención en este momento, y por supuesto todo esto puede cambiar, crear una versión del "Navío Negro" que se hilvane a lo largo de la película. Tal y como lo he escrito, ya tengo planos de entrada y salida del quiosquero y Bernand... Así que lo intentaré en la película y ciertamente al menos lo veremos en el DVD, pero si funciona estupendamente, entonces funciona estupendamente, y podría terminar estando en la película. Sólo quiero hacer la mejor película que pueda.

Noel M.: ¿Qué cambios has hecho en los trajes con respecto al cómic y por qué?

Zack Snyder: Hemos enfocado cada personaje por separado respecto al diseño de sus trajes. En la mayoría de los casos, no hemos mantenido muy cercanos a la novela gráfica. Aunque en algunos caso, hemos hecho ajustes. Creo que Buho Nocturno y Espectro de Seda han sido probablemente los más cambiados con respecto a los diseños originales. Pensamos que estos cambios eran necesarios porque vivimos en un mundo de cine de cómic-books donde los trajes han sido convertidos en fetiches en gran grado. Los trajes, como están dibujados, podrían no ser accesibles a la mayoría de la audiencia actual. También creo que el público podrían no apreciar la ingenuidad de los trajes originales. Así, ha habido cierto esfuerzo para darles una ligera... yo la llamaría apariencia moderna - y no moderna en el sentido de 2007, sino moderno en términos de la estética de los superhéroes. Era importante también para mi que se ajustaran a mi propio gusto como cinéfilo. Por último y posiblemente más importante, quería estar seguro de que hicieran referencia directamente a la mayoría de los vigilantes enmascarados actuales - quienes aún se mantienen anónimos...

Oscar: Me estaba preguntando cuál es el enfoque que tú y Tyler Bates queréis tomar con la banda sonora como sonido y ambientación. ¿Estáis planeando usar las canciones mencionadas en la novela gráfica?

Zack Snyder: Planeo usar algunas canciones mencionadas en la novela gráfica. Watchmen es increiblemente inteligente es su uso de las referencias musicales, tanto las obvias como las sutiles. Hemos hecho una investigación extensiva para asegurarnos de no haber perdido ninguna de las grandes oportunidades musicales que existen en el libro. En cuanto a la banda sonora en sí, una vez que acabemos el rodaje principal, Tyler y yo tendremos más tiempo para sentarnos y ver el montaje juntos. Tyler ha pasado tiempo en el set con nosotros y ha empezado a ver metraje con Billy Hoy, nuestro montador. Hemos empezado a formular una filosofía para la banda sonora - pero esto es sólo el principio.

TK8103: Como todos sabemos, uno de los elementos más intrigantes del traje de Rorschach es el patrón cambiante de su máscara. ¿Cómo va a ser resuelto en pantalla?

Zack Snyder: Como puedes imaginar, la forma más efectiva de mostrar las manchas de tinta siempre cambiantes del rostro de Rorschach es con el uso de los efectos visuales. Así, hemos creado una máscara blanca y hemos colocado estratégicamente pequeños puntos de rastreo verdes en ella. Las marcas se usarán para trazar los contornos de su cara a lo largo de las tomas. También hay unos agujeros que revelan los ojos de Jackie no sólo para que él pueda ver, sino también para ayudar a los artistas de efectos especiales más tarde cuando animen el rostro de Rorschah. Las aperturas les permiten ver qué transmiten los ojos de Jackie. Cuando esté completo, su pasamontañas con puntos verdes y abierto por los ojos será reemplazado por un elemento generado por ordenador, un patrón lentamente cambiante de manchas de tinta. Hemos buscado y analizado las manchas de tinta en la novela gráfica y hemos asignado a cada una diferentes características emocionales - así cuando Rorschach está experimentando algo en una escena, la forma de la máscara refleja sus emociones de una manera gráfica y abstracta. He tenido la oportunidad de ver algunas de las primera pruebas y estoy muy satisfecho de cómo encaja todo.

Soupdragon: ¿Estarán las escenas de lucha envueltas en una acción de velocidad variable al estilo de 300 o se rodarán normalmente?

Zack Snyder: Cada una de las escenas de lucha es un poco diferente y están individualmente influidas tanto por la situación como por los personajes involucrados. El conjunto probablemente no es tan extremo en su uso de la velocidad variable como 300, pero sigo queriendo asegurarme de que la acción mole. No hay que decir que me gusta la acción. Así, aunque pueda no ser exactamente como en 300, va a tener unas cuantas secuencias de lucha intensas y un estilo propio. He tenido la suficiente suerte de tener a Damon Caro a bordo como mi coordinador de especialistas coreografiando las luchas. Damon trabajó conmigo en el mismo cometido en 300 y es realmente el mejor cuando se trata de crear secuencias de lucha innovadoras. Ha puesto mucho tiempo y energía en entrenar con los actores y el equipo de especialistas y los resultados son patentes.

Cory Brown: Watchmen fue todo un hito en los cómics. Aún cuando estoy seguro de que Alan Moore no lo escribió mientras se decía 'Voy a escribir un hito en los cómics', estaba definitivamente tratando con el fértil y no cultivado terreno de colocar las historias de superhéroes junto a los temas más adultos, una idea que se ha convertido en lugar común en los cómic-books desde entonces. Como cineasta consciente de la abundancia de películas de superhéroes de hoy (sin mencionar los últimos 25 años de cómic-books), ¿afrontas Watchmen sólo como una adaptación de una gran historia o también como una oportunidad de trazar tus propias líneas en la arena respecto a las películas de superhéroes (o las películas en general)?

Zack Snyder: Creo que el trabajo de Alan es absolutamente rompedor y fuera eso lo que se proponía hacer o no, es lo que hizo. Creo que para mí, esto va de adaptar una gran obra en una película, pero ciertamente también de hacer una película que haga con suerte al género fílmico de superhéroes lo que el libro hizo en el mundo de los cómics. Es mi esperanza y mi intención arrojar una luz en el estado actual de las películas de superhéroes y lo que significan en la cultura popular, y lo que significan para la gente que las disfrutan y para los fans de los cómics. Así que sí, supongo que si quieres decir "trazar una línea en la arena", eso son palabras fuertes, pero es un material fuerte, así que puede ser justamente lo que esté sucediendo.
