Ryan Reynolds Updates Deadpool Progress; Rating Could Be a Factor
Besides X-Men producer Lauren Shuler Donner admitting last September that a Deadpool movie was still in the works and would "redeem" the character from his appearance in 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine, the most recent update about the movie came when Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld teased a few weeks ago that he "may or may not" have seen eight minutes of "blow your mind" test footage from Deadpool.
The latest update about the movie's progress comes from actor Ryan Reynolds, who is attached to play the character once Fox decides to move forward. In an interview with MTV, Reynolds said that Deadpool is only a matter of "budget and time."If it comes together the way it should, which is rated R and a little bit outside of the box, then yeah, for sure [I'm hopeful Deadpool comes together]. The script is there, everything just comes down to budget and time.Zombieland writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick wrote the script for Deadpool, with visual effects guru Tim Miller hired to direct. Reynolds would not admit whether he took part in the test footage, but his comment about an R rating stood out as curious. Our feeling is that Fox probably wants the movie to be PG-13, and it would seem that Miller, Donner, and certainly Reynolds are waiting for Fox to OK an R rating.
Would a PG-13 rating ruin the effectiveness of a Deadpool movie? Donner said last September that Deadpool would be "violent, and outrageous, and funny" all possible in a PG-13 movie. Sylvester Stallone recently made that very point about the PG-13 rating of the upcoming Expendables 2, calling the sequel the "Barbeque of Grand scale Ass Bashing" that "will not leave anyone hungry." That's Stallone's way of saying the sequel will be "violent and outrageous and funny."
Even Hugh Jackman has admitted that a PG-13 rating was possible for the upcoming non-sequel sequel of The Wolverine so as to not exclude the character's younger fans. Expectations on The Wolverine are huge, and if The Wolverine can't get an R rating, then Deadpool doesn't stand a chance either.
Of course, Deadpool would also require Reynolds' status as a leading man to improve after last summer's Green Lantern and The Change-Up failed to live up to box office expectations and turn Reynolds into a bonafide movie star. Safe House, which opens this Friday, and R.I.P.D., which opens in the summer of 2013, could finally accomplish that and convince Fox that Reynolds is viable enough for a big budget Deadpool that has an R rating.
Apparently Deadpool is Still Alive and Will Shoot in 2012 with Ryan Reynolds
Or at least, thats the going rumor courtesy of a site called the Geek Files (h/t reader Mike).
According to them, sources indicate that Deadpool, a movie adaptation of the comic book character that previously appeared in 2009′s ill-conceived X-Men Origins: Wolverine (then played by Ryan Reynolds), might be rolling before cameras sometime in 2012, about the same time that Fox finally gets The Wolverine with Hugh Jackman going. Of course, weve been hearing that The Wolverine (with James Mangold directing) will go into production for a while now, but that hasnt happened yet, so
The last official word on Deadpool had former special effects man Tim Miller landing the directing gig. Of course, that was back in April of last year. In the meantime, Ryan Reynolds has continued to talk up the film, though some think the negative reactions (reviews as well as box office) for Green Lantern, Reynolds first big comic book movie that was supposed to prove hes capable of carrying a big-budget Summer event film, might have also sunk any chances of a Deadpool movie, especially one that is as brutal and nasty as Reynolds has envisioned.
Geek Files says Fox has returned Deadpool to the front burner and is anxious to get the ball rolling on it. Why, I couldnt tell you. I know the character is immensely popular with fanboys and comic book geeks, but I honestly dont see it having much of a mainstream appeal. Or at least, not enough for the studio to be so gung-ho about getting it made after dragging their feet on it for so long. Then again, we are talking about Fox here, where dragging feet is something of an art form.
Of course, a few days ago comic book guy Rob Liefeld, who created the character, did reveal that hes seen about 8-minutes of test footage from a live-action Deadpool movie, saying:Theyve got a great director on the movie, theyve got a great script. I may or may have not seen some sort of test of footage that would blow your mind if you saw it and go Holy crap, and Thats Deadpool in costume. Katana swords, guns, shooting peoples faces off and making me laugh. And I may or may not have seen something that looks just like that. And youve got what would amount to the first R-rated X-Men movie. Because that script is R-rated.Heres the video of Liefeld talking about that test footage he may or may not have seen at a recent comic convention, but first he prefaces it with the story of Deadpools appearance in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which is pretty priceless:
So maybe a 2012 start date for Deadpool might not be so farfetched after all

Habló el amigo de varios acá, el tio Joe Kelly:
'Deadpool' Comic Writer Sounds Off On Potential Movie
"My opinion is that they should just call me up and have me write the damn thing. Cause that goes without saying."
"Ive actually met with some of those guys over there and talked to them about the movie. From what I can tell, theyre aware of the fan reaction to how he was played in 'Wolverine' and are working very hard to make sure that hes given his props, Theres definitely elements of stuff from my run thats involved in the film. From what Ive been told, I think itll be awesome. Deadpool is a fantastic character, and if Ryan Reynolds still does him, thatd be really great."
Y tiene razón Steven T. Seagle, uno de los de la productora "Man Of Action": "I just want to make the world understand that most everything people love about Deadpool, Joe Kelly made up." -

Ryan Reynolds on Deadpool Again, Pessimistic About a Green Lantern 2
Passion projects are nothing new in Hollywood. You just dont usually see them involving comic books starring guys who talk to the reader and engage in so much meta that it boggles the mind. Which is what Deadpool does in his comics, and, one presumes, what hell do in the movie version if one ever gets made, that is. (Fox currently has the film tentatively pegged for 2014. The operative word here is tentatively.)
But you gotta give Ryan Reynolds credit, though: the guy has yet to lose his passion for a Deadpool movie, and continues to talk it up. In a recent interview with IGN, he had this to say about the films potential R-rating glory:The script is, I think, fantastic. Its been developed further in the last three months or so. But the film has to be rated R and has to be done a certain way and it has to be through all these things, and Im sure it can be a little bit worrisome for the guy whos cutting the checks for it. If its going to be done, it has to be done right.Reynolds also once again confirms that the Deadpool that will appear in Deadpool the movie would have no connections to the Deadpool that showed up in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Good to know, good to know.
He continues:If we ended up doing a Deadpool movie, thatd be a lot of fun. I think having the opportunity to do it rated R would have to mean the budget is down enough that youre given the opportunity to take big risks and do things that most superhero movies havent been able to.
Well, he certainly sounds enthused about a Deadpool movie. But what about a sequel to Green Lantern, Ryan? Im sure there are two, three, maybe even four guys out there still waiting for a sequel:I have no idea. You know, I have no idea. Those movies have huge scale budgets and those sorts of things. Personally, working in the budget world of that kind of level is not as much fun, because theres so much investment in the outcome.Translation: the studio and I took a stab at it, and we both lost.
Heres the deal: I dont see Deadpool needing a big budget. Its not like the guy shoots lasers out of his eyes or atomic beams out of his hands. Hes just a dude armed with swords and guns and a big mouth. Take his introduction in Origins. Thats what you could do with an entire Deadpool movie. Theres no need for Galactus to show up, or the Fantastic Four, etc. Hell, if Reynolds really wants to make this thing, he could slice his paycheck in half (or more) and make it for under $20 million easy.

Tim Miller Attached to Gravel Comic Book Movie, Too
Does this mean Deadpool is still in play? Maybe
Previously attached to direct Ryan Reynolds in what would have been a rollicking good time in Deadpool, VFX man Tim Miller (hes worked on both of Bryan Singers X-Men movies) has now found himself taking over another comic book movie called Gravel, this one based on the Warren Ellis comic book of the same name.
Gravel will follow a man name William Gravel, a soldier in the British S.A.S. who uses his skills in dark magic to moonlight and battle supernatural beings for clients in order to make some extra cash. Hey, guys gotta pay the mortgage, you know.
No word on what this means for Deadpool, if anything. But like most guys who pop up in Hollywood and is suddenly hot stuff overnight without ever actually having done anything to prove theyre deserving of the hot stuff overnight label, Miller is grabbing what he can, while he can. I just hope this doesnt spell doom for Deadpool. I guess well just have to wait and see.
Meanwhile, heres something Miller has done (besides game cinematic cut scenes) that has gotten him noticed: the opening sequence for David Finchers The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

Director Says "Deadpool" is Ready to Shoot
