El shonen -ai es un subgenero del manga y anime que se caracteriza por relaciones gay entre hombres sin que haya sexo. El yaoi es la version explicita de este, y estan bajo el genero de shojo (para chicas) . No es lo mismo que el manga gay, Gei Comi, o Bara como tambien es llamado, en que esta dirigido a la audiencia gay masculina y en que los personajes tienen rasgos fisicos mas masculinos.
